Norvasc is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, and angina. It belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin II antagonists and angiotensin II receptor blockers.
Norvasc is available in a single dose of 50 milligrams once a day (1.25 mg) and in three different strengths (2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg).
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. This medication should be used only by the patient, even if their condition appears to be worse or longer-lasting.
This medication should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Norvasc or any of the ingredients. Norvasc is not FDA approved for the treatment of hypertension, angina, or high blood pressure. It is not known if Norvasc works for angina.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking Norvasc. This medication may cause fetal harm. It is not known if Norvasc passes into breast milk. Therefore, this medication should be avoided during breastfeeding.
Use with caution in patients with a history of glomerular filtration problems (eg, patients with pre-existing reduced kidney function, those with a history of glomerulonephritis) or when these conditions are present. In these patients, careful medical history and physical exam should be performed before starting Norvasc. Norvasc should be used with caution in patients with a history of heart failure or kidney disease. Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Use with caution in patients with a history of stroke.
Use with caution in patients with a history of angina or high blood pressure. Norvasc may cause fetal harm if taken during pregnancy. If Norvasc is detected in breast milk, it should be used with caution in patients with a history of breast-feeding.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Store Norvasc at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Use Norvasc exactly as directed on the label. Follow all directions on the label. Do not use any other medication unless directed by your doctor.
Swallow Norvasc whole; do not crush, break, or chew the tablet. Norvasc is to be taken with food.
